Reading

AS A PARENT WHAT CAN I DO?
The most effective way you can support your child's reading development...read and discuss what was read. Talk with your child about how you think while you read and make connections to the literature. .

Did you know that 15 minutes of daily reading can expose children to over 1 million words per year! Please support your child's education by reading with them, asking them questions, and engaging with their reading for at least 15 minutes a day!

We would like to continue seeing improvement of our student's ability to read and comprehend text. Staff is working to build a highly effective Literacy Block. We are also embedding more content areas into reading, such as science and social studies. Please take the time to reinforce the importance of reading. Primarily, we either read to learn or read to entertain ourselves! Both reasons are relevant to developing powerful readers!!

We believe, with a combination using best practices here at school and having strong parental support, our students' reading abilities will soar! Please take 15 minutes a day to read with your child, actively listen to them, ask them questions about the reading, and remind them how important reading is.

What is Guided Reading?
Guided Reading is one component of a balanced literacy block in any grade level classroom.  Teaching reading is not for the faint of heart.  It requires teachers to have a strong ability to differentiate instruction and be able to diagnose problems students are having with making meaning of the words they see.  Guided reading allows for small groups where teachers can instruct using appropriate strategies to help the individual student progress.  Not all groups will necessarily have students who are at the same level, but they could all be students working on a specific reading strategy.  Either way, the idea is to provide small group instruction that is purposeful in getting students to become more and more independent with text.  The following video is a Q an A about guided reading as a way to help you understand its purpose, and what can be done in a guided reading lesson
